FINAL EXAMINATION
Each of the 50 jingles below contains the sounds of a Portuguese word that you have learned from this book. The jingles themselves you have not seen before. They are constructed just like those in the text. Find and underscore the consecutive syllables that approximate the sound of the Portuguese word.
When you have finished the test, turn to page 78 and check your answers. If your answers are all correct, you can congratulate yourself on a not inconsiderable achievement.
1. The happy scene around your swimming pool
Is like our lovely hostessâcalm and cool.
2. Roving scholars, drawn by curiosity,
Called our schoolâs new wing a sheer monstrosity.
3. Moll, you feed on garlic, catfood, worms.
Whoever sees such self-indulgence squirms!
4. He very often managed to be seen
Dancing attendance on the Campus Queen.
5. Tyrant, you have shut the door on reason.
May pain pursue you in and out of season!
6. In the hospital I drank a liter of the stuff.
The doctor there forgot to say a teaspoon was enough!
7. Ah, Lou, new students always seem to find
Our schoolâs a splendid place to rest the mind.
8. I paid Ramona fifty cents
To throw no stones at my front fence!
9. Now roar a while, O dragon, but donât be too insistent,
For since the dawn of common sense weâve known youâre non-existent!

The town wonât tolerate such actions!
11. In fabled Oz a tale I heard him singâ
A snow-white sea-bird with a broken wing.
12. âSay, does Eva rate a date with Jim?
âIf he says No, Iâll take a switch to him!
13. O Paul Revere, light lamps for me,
One if by land, two if by sea.
Youâll come by air? Resort to three!
14. Moll abides by just one rule: When youâre lost in Istanbul,
Grip your suitcase, keep your cool!
15. âYour love, the Bey, must treat you rather well.
âHe opened up the gates of Heaven and Hell!
16. A true assertion may be indiscreet,
So donât proclaim your doctrines in the street!
17. So mark my words, and, maybe, since itâs you,
From time to time Iâll let you add a few.
18. Coe, heed a warning ere you raise your banners.
I fear youâll never win a race for manners.
19. Though bruised and sore, Chiquita had the luck
To shoot the villain ere the man could duck.
20. Some plaintive Scottish lays the wandering minstrels sang
Until some just-invented law declared the troupe a gang!
21. In town new comrades let me know
What makes the people hate me so.
22. Should I keep my mouth shut? I hate to cause you pain,
But I just saw your latest beau cavorting with Elaine.
23. She will not pay, she slithers like a fish
That makes its silent exit with a swish.
24. Do take a day, Ramona, to think before you marry.
Just find a seat and brood all night if youâre considering Harry!

But rouses heat when he wonât imbibe.

Her after-Christmas appetite was bad.

With half a dozen scratches of his pen.
28. In a garden Sue will not deny you
Unless her rivalâs set herself to buy you.
